MOUNT MERBABU 3,142 masl

Mount Merbabu is one of the mountains that must be visited by climbers because of the beauty of its savanna. Administratively, this mountain is divided into 4 districts, namely Boyolali Regency, Magelang Regency, and Semarang Regency.

The Mount Merbabu National Park (TNGMb) opened 5 official routes for this mountain, namely the Selo, Suwanting, Cuntel, Thekelan and Wekas trails. The Selo route is the most favorite among the others because of its easy access and relatively gentler climbing terrain.

This mountain is famous for the beauty of its savanna, on the north side stands Mount Merapi, which we can enjoy the view if we climb from the Selo route. From the top of Mount Merbabu we can see the complete view to all sides as far as 360 degrees. At its peak there are also several prehistoric heritage stones known as “Kenteng Songo”.

SELO BASECAMP MEETING POINTS

Day 1: Basecamp Selo – Post 4 Sabana 1 (B – L – D)

This morning we will meet and get acquainted at the Selo Climbing Post. Today we will hike for approximately 6 hours to get to Pos 4 Sabana 1. After getting acquainted, we will have breakfast and our team will take care of the registration of climbing tickets.

At the beginning of the trip we will meet local people’s plantations and enter a closed forest to Post 1 Dok Malang for approximately 1 hour.

The journey from post 1 to post 2 Pandean will be a little more uphill with more open forest vegetation. On this path we will be faced with a steep and slippery incline when we arrive at Post 2 for lunch break.

Heading to post 3 the climb will be even steeper with vegetation that has turned into open meadows, at Post 3 Batu Tulis we After post 3 the journey will be even more difficult to get to the camp at Post 4 Sabana 1, the view of Mount Merapi has started to be seen from here.

Approximately 1 hour drive to get to Post 4 from Post 3. At Sabana 4 post 1 we will set up a tent and spend the night while enjoying the expanse of the savanna.

Day 2: Heading 4 Sabana 1 – Peak of Triangulation – Post 4 Sabana 1 – Selo Basecamp (B – L)

Early morning at 04.30 am we will rush to the Triangulation Peak of Mount Merbabu. It takes about 1.5 – 2 hours to get to the top. Along the way we will enjoy the night view of Boyolali City and Salatiga on the east side. The hiking trail to the top is still in the form of savanna and is open, the climbing terrain is in the form of slippery ground. 1 hour drive we will arrive at Pos 5 Sabana 2, here the peak is already visible.

From post 5 the trip to the top is only about 1 hour. At the top we will find a triangulation monument built by the TNGMb Hall to mark the highest peak, about 50 m west of Triangulation Peak there is Syarif Peak where we can find the Kenteng Songo stone.

After 1 hour of celebrating and having a light breakfast at the top, we will return to the campsite at Post 4. On our way down we will be accompanied by the majestic view of Mount Merapi. After arriving at Pos 4 we will pack up and then go back down to Pos Selo for approximately 4 hours of travel. At the Selo post we will have lunch as a celebration of the trip closing.
